Remembering that St. Joseph Vaz first smuggled himself into the northern traditionally Tamil part of Sri Lanka in 1687, was sheltered by the few underground Catholics left there and studied Tamil from them. He founded a Para-liturgy and Catholic Literature in the Tamil and Sinhala languages of Sri Lanka.
